The Width of the iPhone X and iPhone SE are quite different, so our layout automatically adapts between two columns (X) and 1 column (SE).Looking to build a grid layout in your app? The advantage of this approach over using a UITableView is that we have a much more flexible layout that can be presented on different devices. If you now run the application on different devices, you can see that we’ve created an almost static UICollectionView that represents a menu. User tapped on Purple Cell User tapped on Green Cell User tapped on Red Cell User tapped on Blue Cell The completed, flexible layout Now if you run the application, and press on each button, you should see the following output in the Xcode debug console. In a production application, we might instead cast the UITableViewCell to a custom class, and read metadata from it to decide how to branch the application flow. In response, the sample code just prints the Cell Id of the cell the user tapped on. This delegate method is called when the user taps on any of the (four) cells in the UICollectionView. But by adding two data source methods, you can provide the missing information to create the layout design using Interface Builder at runtime.Ĭhange the UIViewController class definition as follows: class ViewController: UIViewController Even though the layout looks similar to what can be done using a static UITableView (except for multiple columns), it's not really a static design. Why is that? It's because all we really did was to design some templates of what a set of dynamic cells can look like. If you ran the application now, you’d see a screen with an empty UICollectionView. Step 2: Implement the view controller delegates When finished your storyboard design should look something like this: Change the UIView color, the UILabel text and the UICollectionViewCell Reuse Identity to differentiate each of the four cells from each other. Now copy & paste the Purple cell three times. Using the Identity Inspector, change the UICollectionViewCell Collection Reusable View Identifier to "Purple Cell".Change the background color of the UIView to Purple, and the UILabel text to "Purple Cell".Add a UILabel to the UIView in step 1, and center it vertically & horizontally in the UIView container.Add a UIView, and use constraints to pin it 4 points from the top, bottom, leading and trailing edges (clear the constrain to margins checkbox).Using the size inspector, customize the UICollectionView cell size to w=170, h=80Ĭustomize the default UICollectionViewCell with the following changes:.Set ViewController as the UICollectionView delegate and datasource.Add a UICollectionView to the View Controller scene in Main.storyboard.Open Xcode and create a new single view application.Step 1: Creating a static layout in Interface BuilderĪs with creating static UITableView layouts, the first step is to create a layout in Interface Builder. But the basic architecture for this approach would be the same. Each cell could be a different Collection View Cell design, and present entirely different content from the others. But a real application could be much more sophisticated. To keep the tutorial simple, this application will just display four cells of identical size and layout. When the user taps on a cell, the application will intercept that event and respond appropriately (in a production app, this may be to fire the correct segue associated with each cell.In landscape mode, the click-able cells will fill the horizontal space before starting a new row. The cells will adapt to the size of the display - for example using a two-column layout on an iPhone X in portrait mode, and a single column on an iPhone SE in portrait mode. The collection view will display a fixed number of cells designed within an Xcode storyboard. We'll provide the following functionality to the application: In this tutorial, we’ll create a UICollectionView that will serve as a "main menu" for an application. The latter dynamic approach is used when the number of cells are not known until runtime-such as a list of products in a product catalog stored on a web service. The former approach can be used to more quickly implement simple use cases like a screen to allow users to change settings. When using a UITableView, we have a choice of either creating a table with static cells or to create cell templates that are used to create cells dynamically.

The use of the Phillips head screws isn’t the best idea it would have been better to have a simple snap lid. Our clock came with two CR2032 3V lithium batteries (must have been an error it’s supposed to have only one) and you’ll have to install the first one to initialize the system. If you’re careful, you can stick a section on the back of the clock so that it doesn’t interfere with the Phillips head screws you’ll need to access when it comes time for a battery change. The Micro Clock comes with matching sections of hook-and-loop. This Micro Clock came with two CR2032 batteries. This makes the buttons difficult to find and press when you’re wearing motorcycle gloves and difficult to find by feel, so you’ll again have to take your eyes off the road to fuss with it. So what’s the problem? Well, the buttons are membrane types, again to maintain the water resistance. To turn on the backlight, the SEL button must be pressed and held for about 2 seconds. To switch between time and temperature, you have to press the “SEL” button on the bottom. This makes it difficult to read the clock and you don’t wan to be spending a lot of time looking down at it whilst you’re riding a motorcycle. The soft clear plastic cover on the face of the Micro Clock helps make it weatherproof, but it also can be easily overwhelmed in the light, creating a lot of glare and low screen contrast. So you’ll need to find some flat real estate on the triple tree top or dashboard or maybe the fairing or possibly even the fuel tank, and there lies the rub. Those dimensions that seem petite at first may not be, depending on where you want to mount it.įorget a round handlebar, because it’s not really designed for that. Long-haulers have banded together in online groups and new initiatives such as Survivor Corps and the Patient-Led Research Collaborative. "And I am just so relieved to have the stronger protection that vaccines provide above natural immunity." Not All Long-Haulers Are Opting For Vaccine, And Some Who Do See Little ChangeĪ billboard on the side of Highway 26 in Rock County encourages people to get the COVID-19 vaccine. we'll be able to really put this behind us," she said. Giblin has had less of the skin flushing as well, and her headaches have been less severe. She's continued to improve in the weeks since. "Maybe a week after her first vaccine, she said, 'Mom, I can smell your coffee,'" Giblin said. But her daughter did experience the persistent loss of taste and smell. Giblin's 17-year-old daughter was nowhere near as sick as Giblin was when the illness moved through her family. "I'll take a one-in-three chance that it might help along the way." "Some of these cursory reports were saying maybe one-third (improved)," she said. As vaccinations became more widespread earlier this year, she started to see reports that some long-haulers were seeing improvements. I was sicker than I've ever been in my entire life."įor Giblin, the lingering symptoms have been headaches, facial flushing, fatigue and a cough. "I was very, very, very sick with COVID-19," Giblin said. They both continued to go to work through the pandemic, and she said she spent all of 2020 "just stressed out all the time" because she knew, with her pre-existing condition, that catching COVID-19 would likely be serious for her. She works with older adults and adults with disabilities in Portage County, and her husband is a firefighter. Giblin already had one chronic condition, diabetes, before she became afflicted with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome. "I'm really sick of this pandemic," said Giblin, 44, of Stevens Point. That meant she had to wait 90 days before she could get vaccinated. Kate Giblin had COVID-19 in December, and in January she was treated with monoclonal antibodies. "I can smell it when my husband puts his cologne on." "My smell has been 100 percent better" since she got vaccinated, Britton said. She's part of the group whose symptoms improved. Britton had been experiencing lingering symptoms since her family got sick in January. Jalaine Britton, 56, of Wisconsin Rapids, said she and her 19-year-old daughter got vaccinated together last month. Research into vaccines' effects on long-haulers is ongoing. Unfortunately, she also found up to 15 percent say they feel worse after vaccination - and the rest report no noticeable change. A researcher at Yale found as many as 40 percent of those who get the vaccine report an improvement in their symptoms. Its causes still aren't fully understood, and neither are the reasons vaccinations appear to help some people and not others. Fatigue and gastrointestinal distress are other common symptoms.ĬOVID-19 was a new and little-understood disease for much of 2020 it wasn't until months into the pandemic that post-acute COVID-19 syndrome was named or recognized by doctors. Many patients report a persistent loss of smell and taste as well as tachycardia, or a sudden racing heart rate. Some people experience "brain fog" or depression in extreme cases previously stable patients even had paranoia or psychosis. "I'm hoping maybe it will just finally subside and go away," Burbank, 61, of Lodi, said in an interview last month, the day after she got her second vaccine dose. Still, after months of frustration and confusion around the new chronic condition, many who deal with it are finding hope that vaccines can be the beginning of the end of their long hauls. Researchers say it's too soon to draw any firm conclusions, and early surveys suggest only some people with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome see improvement after vaccination. In recent months, Burbank and thousands of other "long-haul" COVID-19 sufferers have been buoyed by early indications that getting vaccinated can trigger improvements in their conditions. For her, that has meant persistent fatigue, intermittent loss of taste and smell, and an odd numbness and tingling in her right hand. 22.Īfter that, she became one of the roughly one-third of patients for whom some symptoms of the disease don't go away. Aside of this daemon, SSD Fan Control features a user-friendly application for monitoring and control. To detect the fan speed, it has real-time monitoring. The free Open Hardware Monitor software runs on 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10 and any x86 based Linux operating systems. DrFan automatic mode considers all thermal. It has numerous fans, and you can switch among them anytime. DrFan is THE fan control utility of choice for both the gamers and professionals who utilize the CPU & GPU heavily. This app was mainly created to control the fan on both computers. It lets you control the minimum fan speed of both laptop and desktop Macs with Intel CPUs. And can be used for Windows particularly. smcFanControl is free to download and comes with a few essential features. It is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS. Whenever the SMC system resets to its default, SSD Fan Control takes over again to make sure that your system remains quiet. Unlike its name, it’s not only limited to Mac operators. The core of the system is a daemon that runs in the background and takes care of the fan management. Warning: Configuring or completely stopping fans on high system load might result in permanently damaged hardware. It enables you to overrule the automatic fan control and manually configure the fan speed. Fan control can bring various benefits to your system, such as quieter working system and power saving by completely stopping fans on low CPU load. Like its other counterparts, it also has some drawbacks. This freeware program is available for download from the Mac Fan Control website in more than 30 different languages. In both cases the SMC system tends to go into frenzy and drive you mad with a loud fan. It is free to download using Boot Camp, which is multi-utility software that enables Apple Macintosh PCs and laptops to run both Windows and Mac OS. Through a simple interface, you get the option to control the most relevant characteristics for each part in order to ensure the proper functioning of your PC. Latest Macs Fan Control posts from our blog: MacBook Pro and Mac mini 2023 suport We’re happy to announce that the most recent version of Macs Fan Control fully supports new MacBook Pro and Mac mini 2023 with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. Sometimes reusing the external sensor is not possible or, as in more recent generations of iMacs, replacing the original hard disk breaks the system’s temperature monitoring. Macs Fan Control is a program for Mac that allows you to gain full control over your Macs speed and temperature as controlled by its internal cooling system: its fans. The SMC collects data from external sensors or by reading the internal hard disk temperature in a proprietary manner. Fan management in Apple systems relies on temperatures reported by the SMC system. My only suggestions to the author would be for some user adjustable parameters for fan speeds to taste (although the defaults are pretty good) and it'd be cool to see an OSX version since SMCFanControl has no upper limits (won't keep your Mac from frying itself when CPU cranks up unless you manually turn up the fan) and Lobotomo's FanControl/iFanControl is out of date and doesn't work with all Macs (seems to be a lot of customized versions out there, but they usually lack 64-bit support, etc.IMac users who tweak their systems using 3rd party hard disks or solid state disks, are often surprised by an unpleasant aftermath: an annoyingly noisy hard disk fan. It IS a Windows program but for Mac hardware that is currently running Windows not OSX). Click UEFI Firmware settings and select Restart. Click Troubleshoot and then Advanced options. According to the Observatory, the judges were “captivated by Lefadeux’s awe-inspiring image.” Once you build up a nice collection of abilities-called artes-for your characters, the combo system really starts to come together, but by today's standards, battles feel awfully stiff. Your character is always locked on to an enemy and is restricted to a 2D plane where they can run either towards or away from the enemy in a straight line, while attacks are designed to be chained together in short combos based on directional inputs paired with button presses. Plus, each dungeon introduces some new idea or gimmick, which helps to differentiate them and create a more concrete sense of progress as you move on.Ĭombat in Tales of Symphonia is action-based and bears a lot of similarities to 3D fighters like Tekken. None of these go much beyond the torch-lighting or block-pushing kinds of things that have been done to death by now, but they help break up the monster battles and give you a little more of a challenge for reaching certain chests. Dungeons are a highlight of the overall gameplay loop, bringing to mind the likes of Golden Sun with the use of puzzles before you reach the boss at the end. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before, but we feel that the pacing here is good at pushing you through content before anything starts to overstay its welcome. Gameplay follows the typical JRPG conventions of exploring a big world map, visiting towns, and exploring dungeons nearby to keep the plot moving. Still, it's a great ride all the way through, and we’d say that story is overall Tales of Symphonia’s strongest suit. Suffice to say the uneven writing holds back the overall story from reaching its full potential. In some ways, the unwieldy exchanges certainly add to the charm of Tales of Symphonia, while in others they blunt it. Some of these cutscenes cover a ridiculous range of emotions in just a minute or two, and dialogue rarely feels natural-it’s the epitome of a ‘video game script’. The downside to all this, however, is that the writing itself is quite stiff and often unintentionally hilarious. Admittedly, several of these twists are telegraphed in advanced, but we were still impressed by the narrative ambition on display. What initially seems like a run-of-the-mill exercise in tired tropes soon gives way to a much more interesting adventure featuring some shocking plot twists. Tales of Symphonia tells quite a compelling tale, at least in the broad strokes. Lloyd is the headstrong son of a dwarven smith, and after he inadvertently causes a terrible tragedy in his village, Lloyd sets out with his best friend Genis to accompany and protect their friend Colette on her journey to fulfill her Chosen duties and save the world from destruction.Ĭaptured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked) You take the role of Lloyd, good friend of the current Chosen, Colette. The only hope is for the Regeneration to take place, in which a person dubbed “The Chosen” opens various seals across the land to awaken the goddess and return life to all things. A critical shortage of mana caused by the lingering effects of a war from thousands of years back means that the world is itself dying, and time is running out fast for the inhabitants. The story is set in the land of Sylvarant, which is experiencing a bit of an ecological crisis. Now, Tales of Symphonia Remastered-which is based on the 2013 PS3 rerelease, which in turn uses the PS2 Japan-exclusive version as a base-has brought the classic experience to modern hardware and while it still remains a charming adventure, it’s definitely showing its age. Sporting an attractive cel-shaded visual style and packing enough content to last for hundreds of hours, there was a lot to love about this release back when the pickings were much slimmer for great RPGs on Nintendo consoles. Back in 2004, Namco (no Bandai yet) was only on the fifth iteration of the Tales series, which made the bold transition to full 3D with the release of Tales of Symphonia on the GameCube. Though it’s never quite had the popularity of the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest franchises, the Tales series has set a good reputation as the ‘other’ classic JRPG series that’s consistently maintained a decent quality for quite some time now. |
